Classic Sloppy Joes Recipe

Classic Sloppy Joes are a comforting, flavorful sandwich made with ground beef, sautéed vegetables, and a tangy-sweet sauce, all served on toasted buns.

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

  • 1 pound ground beef

  • ½ cup chopped onion

  • ½ cup chopped green bell pepper

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • ¾ cup ketchup

  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar

  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard

  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

  • ½ teaspoon chili powder (optional)

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

  • 4 hamburger buns

  • Optional toppings: sliced pickles, cheese slices, coleslaw

Instructions

  • Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.

  • Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up as it cooks.

  • Add chopped onion, green bell pepper, and garlic. Cook until softened, about 3–4 minutes.

  • Stir in ketchup, brown sugar, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and chili powder. Mix well.

  • Reduce heat to low and simmer for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens.

  • Season with salt and pepper to taste.

  • Toast hamburger buns if desired, then spoon the meat mixture onto the bottom half of each bun.

  • Add optional toppings if using.

  • Top with the remaining buns and serve warm.

Notes

  • For a leaner option, substitute ground turkey for ground beef.

  • Add finely chopped vegetables like carrots or zucchini for added nutrition.

  • Adjust the sweetness and tanginess by varying the amounts of brown sugar and mustard.
